Happy 4th of July - ALMOST to Alaska

Another 3-day post covering the travels from Watson Lake, Yukon Territories to Dawson City via Whitehorse  both also in the YT.  After the previous days of frequent wild beasts, the last days were almost none.  While stopped at one of the not infrequent road maintenance stops I asked the flagger, "Where are all the bears?"  His response, "Well, first you gotta get up before noon."

Smartass Canuk. We were up by 9 am.

Anyway, the scenery was magnificent as usual with most vestiges of "civilization" being reduced to an occasional road-side gas station/motel/auto repair shop/cafe and bar, sometimes all in one building.  To be fair, Whitehorse is a reasonable sized town, (with a Walmart) and the "traffic" made me crazy.

ince I lost track of what pic's were taken where, I'll just post them with minimal commentary.

This is what they do for excitement 80 miles west of Watson Lake

Cinnamon Bun Int'l Airport

Only "wild" animal we saw.

Yes - We still like each other!

Stern wheeler steam boats carried gold seekers down the Yukon river from Whitehorse to Dawson City.  Five - Finger Rapids was one of several challenges.  Only one of the fiver passages got you there alive.

Eeenie, Meenie, Minny, Mo?

Typical roadside accomodations.

450 mile dirt road to Arctic Ocean.
We didn't go this way.
(But might next year.)

Dawson City is a very interesting place.  Center of the 1895 Klondike gold rush, it now a national historic site.  While there has been some renovation, the town seems to have been brought up to only about 1920's standards.  All but the main street are still dirt, and the sidewalks all boardwalks.  It has the feel of a normal "working mining town" (which it is) and that, oh, by-the-way has some interesting historical significance.

Dawson remodel.

Dawson for real

Note moose antlers on 2nd story.

NOT a bad camera angle.
(Don't  build on permafrost.)

Ferry across the Yukon River.  Ramps just a bulldozed part
of the river bank.

A waterborne version of the funmobile.
A tent on a raft of oil drums and logs.
Our campsite on the Yukon River.

Good Night from Dawson City, Yukon Territory

PS  -  It's 11:00 at night and I I were going out for a walk, I'd be taking sun glasses.  Bizarre!

  1. Love the church! Makes me feel less bad about the settling and cracking that goes on around my house!

  2. I like the FunMoBoat. Makes me feel less bad about how long it's been since I vacuumed :)

  3. If you lived in a 6 X 10 tent on a raft, you wouldn't have much vacuuming to do. Note - the 2 plastic lawn chairs were a nice touch.
