Tuesday 13 June–Fair Winds and Following Seas

TUESDAY

Today we make the last 30 miles down lake to Oak Bay where we will lay up for a few days.  No drama on the way down, just a lot of breath-taking scenery and relaxation.

Our Navy deck hands were never this good looking (or as competent for that matter).

Monday 12 Jun – Day Two–Batten Down the Hatches

MONDAY

Breakfast at 7 am during which one of our mooring lines came loose in 30 mph gusts of morning wind (unusual).  A little mild panic as we rushed to get the engines started, remaining anchors released and the small boat clear of the rampaging aircraft carrier.

Under way in a stiff breeze and finishing the interrupted breakfast.  Winds picking up throughout the morning.

By late morning plugging along 4 mph (s/b 12 mph) against occasional 50 mph gusts.  Now happy to have the aircraft carrier.  Significant number of “mayday” calls on the radio from smaller boats out on the lake.  Tie up for the night near the mouth of the San Juan River.  Winds have dropped into the teens and are manageable.

Sunday 11 June–Official Day 1 on the Lake

SUNDAY
After a good evening meal last night and breakfast we drive down to the marina and basically haul the entire contents of the Funmobile and the Loffredi car onto our assigned 60 foot houseboat (which is essentially a floating version of the progeny of the Funmobile and an aircraft carrier ).

IMG_0236IMG_0237
IMG_0248IMG_0239

We pick up our towed small 19 foot powerboat and are on our way for what should be a 2-day 50 mile run to Oak Bay.  Ha Ha. The marina pilot who takes us out of the harbor offers that she just made the run up from the south end of the lake and that the wind was “ridiculous” at Rincon where we had planned the first night stop.  So instead of making planned 20 miles, we made about 6 miles and sought out refuge from the 20-30 mph winds.

Saturday 10 June - Day One Lake Powell

SATURDAY

Arrived at Lake Powell last night after driving down from Salt Lake City after picking up Jess at the airport.  Rest of the tribe is in Colorado visiting to Mesa Verde and will meet up with them later tonight.
To fill the day, we (Val, Jess and I) picked up a 19 foot standard power boat to explore the northern part of the lake.

IMG_0222IMG_0223

Its a little choppy, but not too bad.  Not going too far, just a conditioning cruise for the week to follow.

IMG_022420170610_115731

THEN the fun began. Crossing from one side of the lake the other, an insistent beeping sound.  Putter around to see what’s up, Maybe it’s like a computer and just needs a re-boot.  Key off - engine off – key on – restart – BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH ….  NOTHING.

Hmmmmm… we’re in the middle of the lake, about 15 mph wind and no engine.  Call marina on the radio. Nothing.  Call marina on the cell phone and get a promise of “we’ll have someone there in a little while” which turns out to be about 45 minutes and 10 minutes from being blown up on the rocks.
IMG_0234Says the mechanic, “Needs a new battery I think. I’ll put one in and you should head back to the marina.”  (Consistent with yesterday’s Walmart experience.)  OK by me because the wind has picked up a bit and this little put-put ain’t the Kon Tiki.

Staying at the lodge tonight so check in for out two rooms with 2 double beds each to find that they arbitrarily changed the reservation to 2 rooms with one king bed each, which after threatening to have our grand children sleep in the lobby with the night manager, they ponied up a third king room for free.

Everybody shows up and we have a grand reunion before turning in.

Good night from Bullfrog Utah, (about 3 hrs from the nearest grocery store of any use).

Wednesday 7 June - Crazy Busy Day

Up at the crack of dawn (honest) to drive down the mountain to p/u tickets, then 20 miles back up the mountain to drop them off at the Loffredi hotel, then 25 miles back down the mountain to empty the dump tanks and take on water, then fix the quirky generator, then 10 miles to Safeway and stop at the Post Office.......

THEN 180 miles north to Arches National Park for a short stop on the way to Green River Utah for the night.

Awaiting a Kodak Moment

PS - Did I mention it was 101 F on arrival Green River?

Tuesday 6 June - Hit the Slopes

Today was a travel day from Gunnison south on Utah 145  to Telluride and on to Mesa Verde on a road that is new to us.  Highly recommended for some nice mountain scenery and a lunch stop in Telluride, an 1880's gold/silver mining town turned ski destination.  Nice upscale but earthy shopping and food surrounded by the San Juan Mountains.

Not looking forward to the ride out of the valley.

An early evening stop at the Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde.
There's one of these shots in a post a couple of years back.

A VERY unflattering accidental selfie.
Mesa Verde was just a quickie stop to pick up Cliff Palace tour tickets for The Loffredi's when they show up in a couple of days. But by then we'll be on our way to Salt Lake City to P/U Jess. Ultimately the plan is for everyone to hook up in Bullfrog UT where we start the houseboat trip.

Good night from Mesa Verde Campground

Monday 5 June– A Flatlander’s Conditioning Hike

Arrived mid-morning at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and spent the day conditioning with a 5-mile hike at this higher altitude.  Because of all my youthful indiscretions we then took an afternoon nap.  I’ll skip the dialog and just post some photos.  You get the idea.

Sunday June 4 – Good Omen (or Bad)

Sunday was an early start from eastern Colorado’s North Sterling State Park and we were on the road a little after seven.  Our reward was to catch sight of an early morning buzzard on the way out of the park.

  20170603_073842a

For those not experienced in seeking out early morning buzzards, they find a high perch in the evening so that in the morning they can just spread their wings in the morning sun to get blood flowing so they can jump off and fly (as opposed to jump off an flop to the ground like a dead fish  -  which is about what they smell like.)

Further down a back country road through the featureless east Colorado grasslands, we encounter an important historical landmark which says (paraphrased):

.20170604_073254

“Right nearby here in 18-something William Hadfield, the first crazy white dude to settle these parts, built a sod house right in the middle of featureless, Cheyenne infested, east Colorado.  Rumor has it that he selected this spot because it’s where his horse dropped dead.  Some years later, A new neighbor, Rufus McCord moved in a dozen or so miles down the road and hence setting the stage for a feud that would run for decades thereafter.”

The rest of the day was transiting through Denver to finally reach the beautiful southern Rockies, through which all Denver’s 5 million or so inhabitants were also transiting on their way home from a sunny mild weekend.  (Fortunately they were all going in the other direction.)

20170604_115656

On the way through the mountains we stopped to check out an isolated grave I had spotted during trip planning.

20170604_141950a

According to “Ruby”, from nearby Sargents Colorado (pop. 20-30) it’s said to be the grave of “Baby Girl” Sanchez, daughter of a late 1800’s railroad worker passing through.

We arrive at our campground near Gunnison Co in time for an evening walk to view the sunset.

Good night form somewhere near Gunnison.

Saturday 3 June - Redaction

Just read over yesterday's post and decided it was WAY too negative and sarcastic for the first day of the trip.  (Maybe OK for later.)  So I'm officially redacting anything political, offensive, off color, or factually incorrect.  All else remains as I'm too lazy to re-do the entire post.

As for today, still transiting the Great mid-west and made it as far as eastern Colorado (North Sterling State Park to be exact.)  Actually just a large reservoir in the rolling Colorado grass lands.

Did see a bunch of pelicans taking the garbage to the dumpster.  (I was taking the garbage, not the pelicans.)  Didn't have my camera since typically, dumpsters are not particularly photogenic.  Too bad.

Goodnight from Sterling State Colorado.

FRIDAY 2 JUNE We are on our way

Image result for hoover rest stop iowaDay one of our trip to Points West starting with Illinois (obviously) which only took 10 hours, and then Iowa which took another 20, (or so it seemed).  Only a couple of stops, the first near the Amana Colonies where I paid $0.40 a gallon more for gas than anyplace else I saw (so much for plain and simple life) , and the second at a rest stop named after Herbert Hoover (of vacuum cleaner fame).

FAKE News - Actually Herb was actually our President once, but is probably happy to be dead rather than the President of our currently dysfunctional nation.  (Not pointing fingers mind you.)  There are those that say he sucked worse than his namesake.

Presiding over the Great Financial Depression was probably a lot more fun than our current Great Emotional Depression.  (Again, keeping finger pointed straight to the ground.)

On a lighter note, last night was 8th grade graduation for our beloved J Loffredi.  Obviously those eyebrow genes are not of our Scotch/Irish/Polish origin.

Knowing we'd be out celebrating late, instead of packing, I scheduled a late 11 am start and short run to western Iowa instead of the normal eastern Nebraska.  However, I was unceremoniously "nudged" awake at 5 am and on the road as usual at 9 am sharp.  (Shock)

So good night from Prairie Rose State Park, Harlan Iowa.  (Still looking for a rose amid the corn stubble.)
